New Sports Fundraising Platform Makes it Easier to Give Back While Shopping Online
According to a recent National Retail Federation survey, Americans intend to spend more money on gift cards this holiday season than ever before. The study claims the average consumer buying gift cards will spend $173, up $10 from 2013. Purchases of gift cards are expected to reach $32 billion, making it the gift of choice for most Americans.
The popularity of gift cards is great news for a growing population of community-based sports leagues that now use gift card sales to fund everything from out-of-town tournaments to new equipment.
Leading the charge on this new form of online fundraising is Toronto-based FlipGive. The company’s proprietary online fundraising platform brings major retailers together with grassroots fundraisers looking to raise money for local causes. Popular retailers provide offers (such as e-gift cards or online shopping vouchers) that a fundraiser’s network of family and friends can purchase, and up to 50 percent of the purchase price is given directly to the fundraiser’s cause.
Recently, FlipGive partnered with TeamSnap and Under Armour to develop a new sports fundraising program designed to help reduce the increasing cost of sports. Called ‘Raise the Game‘, the free online program allows parents, coaches and athletes to easily raise money for their teams while their friends and family shop online.
“Many minor league sports organizations across North America continue to struggle with raising money for their teams,” said Steve Croth, Founder and CEO of FlipGive. “Much of the burden of fundraising falls on the shoulders of parents who are both time-pressed and not equipped to run successful fundraising campaigns.”
‘Raise the Game’ was conceived on the simple premise that the power of social networking and e-commerce advances could bring community-based fundraising into the twenty-first century. By connecting retailers looking to drive sales and acquire customers with grassroots fundraisers, FlipGive is making significant inroads in transforming the fundraising industry.
“It’s not surprising that gift cards have become the ‘go to’ gift of the holiday season,” added Croth. “Our hope is that more people take advantage of programs like ours, where online shopping and giving go hand-in-hand.”
